Charleston, W. Va. Representatives from the West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) invite local media today to join them on a site tour of one of the 31 alignments currently being studied for the West Run Expressway.
"We wanted to extend an invitation to the media in and around the West Run Expressway area to join us on a site tour of one of the proposed routes for West Run to see first hand exactly what the Division of Highways must do when studying a proposed highway route," said Highways Commissioner Sam Beverage.
No alignment has been chosen at this point, Beverage explained. "A preferred alignment for West Run will not be chosen until late this year. The Division of Highways wants the community to have an adequate amount of time to review alignments and participate in the process. We want to hear what the community has to say," Beverage said.
The alignment being toured today was chosen as a result of a suggestion from the West Run Advisory Council. Jim Sothen, WVDOH director of engineering division, explained, "The West Run Advisory Council has indicated
that this particular route is of interest to them. We will be getting official comments from the group very soon and we will seriously consider all their options," Sothen said.
"The Division of Highways is currently reviewing alignments that the community has suggested, for example, the alignment that we are touring today. Out of the 31 alignments being studied, none are a preference to the DOH," he said.
Commissioner Beverage added, "We build roads to make communities safer, to provide better access and to make an overall improvement in transportation for the area. The people who live here have a right to participate in this process of building a new road and we are here because we want the public to be involved."
The tour begins at 11 a.m. at the Easton Elementary School located at 2901 Point Marion Rd. in Morgantown. Included in the driving tour will be opportunities for the media to stop and become better acquainted with the layout of one of the possible alignments for the expressway.
